The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police Department will host its inaugural Citizen’s Police Academy in September.
The six-week academy is designed to educate members of the campus community about the University Police Department. Participants will learn about campus public safety resources and increase their awareness of police procedures.
“The purpose of the Citizen’s Police Academy is to increase the level of police community engagement and build partnerships with university faculty, staff and students,” Chief Owen Yardley said. “It will also provide greater education and awareness about public safety operations and responsibilities of the University Police Department.”
Topics that will be covered include dispatch communications and support services, police technology, patrol functions, investigative services, bomb detection canines, emergency preparedness and event management. The academy will incorporate classroom presentations, a police ride-along, demonstrations and other interactive activities.
The program will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays from Sept. 19 to Oct. 24. Participation is free of charge. All applicants must be 19 years of age and a member of the university community. The application process includes a background check.
The academy is limited to 12 participants and applications are available online. The deadline to apply is Aug. 31.
