A new University of Nebraska–Lincoln program is helping Huskers prepare for careers by providing a balance of skills in leadership, innovation and inclusive excellence.
The Institute for Inclusive Innovation, or I-3, which is housed within the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center, offers a comprehensive one-year experience, spanning the fall and spring semesters. The fall semester kicked off with a 10-week immersive experience, delving into critical topics such as cultural intelligence, perspective-taking, communication, inclusive leadership, creativity, branding and entrepreneurship.
The diverse curriculum is designed to provide students a holistic understanding of the interconnectedness of the concepts. It includes tailored interactive sessions, delivered by industry professionals, to provide students with practical tools and strategies applicable to a wide range of fields.
“Many of the speakers shared great tools and strategies for creative thinking, emphasizing that it doesn’t have to be complex,” said Jessica Wynne, a junior communication studies major. “I found all of these insights incredibly helpful, and I’ve been applying them to areas I’ve been struggling with lately. They’ve been valuable reminders and have made a real difference for me.”
A key component of the I-3 program is its emphasis on experiential learning. During the spring semester, students transition from classroom learning to real-world application through internships working on specialized projects tailored to their individual interests. The I-3 program partners with various organizations, matching students based on their interests, majors, and career goals. This ensures that each student gains relevant and valuable experience. These placements cover a broad spectrum of career fields, from arts and entertainment to health care and tech, demonstrating the program's wide reach and impact.
This hands-on experience allows students to put the I-3 principles — innovation, leadership, and inclusive excellence — into practice. This immersive phase offers several pathways for learning, such as inclusive innovation projects within organizations, CEO or entrepreneur mentorships, and tailored leadership or innovation projects. This flexibility allows students to tailor their experience to their specific needs and goals.
“I will take with me how closely innovation and DEI knowledge are connected and what I can do with a creative and open mind to truly leave an impact on communities,” said Caroline Smith, a junior business administration major. “I think this program will open the door for a lot of students to understand the correlation between DEI knowledge and better workplace environments.”
The program culminates in a spring showcase where students will present their work, followed by a completion ceremony where they will receive their I-3 certificates.
“The I-3 program is an incredible experience that not only prepares the next cohort of leaders but also inspires them,” said Jathesn Xretqalin, a junior advertising and public relations major. “Students have a great support system and educational opportunities while simultaneously networking with professionals.
“It is the most amazing program I have every participated in.”
