The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior combines multiple disciplines and state of the art facilities to expand understanding of brain function and its effects on human behavior. The CB3 has a unique partnership with Nebraska Athletics through which groups share data gathered from CB3’s brain-imaging equipment and the performance lab’s sophisticated motion-tracking sensors, creating a more complete picture of what influences behavior and performance. This work could lead to discoveries about brain function, head injury, human performance and psychology that benefit athletes, the health care community and broader society.
Bio
Aron Keith Barbey is director of the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior and the Decision Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He began his career at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His research investigates the neural mechanisms of human intelligence and decision making, with particular emphasis on enhancing these functions through cognitive neuroscience, physical fitness, and nutritional intervention. His research has been supported by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of Defense, the White House BRAIN Initiative, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and private industry (Abbott Nutrition, Google Brain, and PepsiCo). Barbey has received multiple research awards and is the editor of the Cambridge Handbook of Intelligence and Cognitive Neuroscience and the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Cognitive Enhancement and Brain Plasticity. He earned his doctorate in Psychology from Emory University and completed a research fellowship in Cognitive Neuroscience at the National Institutes of Health. He holds the he Mildred Francis Thompson Professorship of Psychology at UNL. Updated 10/5/23

Bio
A board-certified clinical neuropsychologist, Arthur Maerlender is director of clinical research at the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior. He is focused on improving the system of care for traumatic brain injury , while conducting research into the identification and treatment of sports-related concussions and mild traumatic brain injury. For the past 10 years, he has provided testing consultation and expertise to more than 30 concussion management programs for youth leagues, schools, colleges and professional teams. He serves as research director for the Big Ten-Ivy League Collaboration of Research in Sports Concussions. Maerlender also is the director of the Concussion Assessment Program, which is responsible for the neuropsychological testing of varsity and club-sport athletes at UNL. Updated 10/4/23.
