The Academy-Award nominated drama “The Broken Circle Breakdown” and the documentary “Liv & Ingmar” open Feb. 7 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Both films are unrated and play through Feb. 13.
In “The Broken Circle Breakdown,” Elsie (played by Veerle Baetens) and Didier (Johan Heldenbergh) fall in love at first sight. She owns a tattoo shop and he plays a banjo in a bluegrass band. They bond over a shared enthusiasm for American music and culture, diving headfirst into a romance that plays out on and off stage.
However, an unexpected tragedy hits their new family, testing everything the couple knows and loves.
The film — nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film — includes a soundtrack propelled by foot-stomping bluegrass music.
The documentary “Liv & Ingmar” follows the 42-year-long relationship between legendary actress Liv Ullmann and master filmmaker Ingmar Bergman.
The affectionate and truthful account follows the couple both on and off screen. The film is told entirely from Ullmann’s point of view and includes images and sounds from the timeless Ullmann-Bergman films, behind-the-scenes footage and still photographs.
