The UNL Glenn Korff School of Music will present the 10th annual Celebration of American Song at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27 in Kimball Recital Hall. The celebration honors Sheldon Harnick.
As both a lyricist and a composer, Harnick wrote lyrics for 29 Broadway musicals and has contributed more than 200 songs to the great American songbook. His songs provided early hits for young actors Barbara Cook, Jack Cassidy, Bea Arthur and Tom Bosley. More recently, Harnick’s songs were revival hits for Broadway stars, including Kate Baldwin, Kristin Chenoweth and Alfred Molina.
For the Jan. 27 performance, UNL’s voice faculty, alumni and students will present live performances of Harnick’s songs, ranging from the rousing “If I Were a Rich Man” and the poignant “Sunrise Sunset” to the jubilation of “She Loves Me.”
Alisa Belflower, coordinator of musical theatre studies, will be host, narrating with anecdotes from Harnick’s life and career.
Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens.
