The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Classics and Religious Studies Department and CORE* present an introduction and post-screening discussion of “Chi-Raq,” Spike Lee’s newest film, at 5 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Ross Media Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public.
“Chi-Raq” is based on the ancient Greek play “Lysistrata” by the poet Aristophanes about a group of women who institute a sex strike to force the men to end an ongoing war. The film has been adapted to fit modern Chicago by offering a diverse range of cultures that come together.
The film screening will be preceded by an introduction on both the classical roots of the film by Professor Mike Lippman, as well as an introduction to Spike Lee’s previous work by Kwakiutl Dreher, associate professor of English. Following the screening, there will be a talk-back panel, with respondents including students, faculty members from multiple departments, administrators and community members.
