The Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will hold an open house of its new and expanded commodity trading room from 2 to 4 p.m. May 5 in Filley Hall, Room 105.
The space is designed to give students real-time commodity marketing experience and advanced training in markets, merchandising, futures and options. Students are able to develop and test trading strategies, merchandise commodities and develop risk management plans in a dynamic real-time learning environment.
“The more realistic the educational environment, the more relevant the education will be,” said Larry Van Tassell, head of the department. “In short, it gives our students a real-time education.”
The trading room features individual computer work stations loaded with the latest analytical and simulation software, connected to a market exchange, with each station having multiple monitors. The room also features smart boards for instruction on key topics related to commodities trading.
Outreach trading programs and training for producers, merchandizers and commodity traders will also be held in the trading room.
Organizations that provided support for the redesigned space include the CHS Foundation, CoBank, Archer Daniels Midland Company, Cargill, Nebraska Soybean Board, Nebraska Corn Board, Lansing Trade Group, Andersons Charitable Foundation, Scouler Foundation, Ag Processing and the Nebraska Wheat Board.
