The University of Nebraska State Museum’s monthly “Investigate: Second Saturday Science Lab” kicks off a new year by exploring the world of owls.
The “All About Owls” program is 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 9. Visitors will be able to examine an owl pellet, see a great horned owl skull and jaw, and take a look at a screech owl’s wings and talons. All “Second Saturday Science Lab” activities are free with regular museum admission.
Other featured science topics offered through the program this year will include spiders, sights and sounds of spring, and craters and meteors.
New this year are chances for children to earn prizes as they attend the science lab events. For three events attended, a child becomes a “science intern” and receives a science poster; for six events attended, a child becomes an “assistant investigator” and receives a set of specimen trading cards; and for nine visits, a child becomes a “lead investigator” and earns a field guide notebook. Families can download and print the calendar from http://museum.unl.edu/investigate or pick up a copy during a science lab event.
“Investigating science firsthand by our younger visitors provides another fun and engaging opportunity for them while at the museum,” said Kathy French, NU State Museum education coordinator. “These young scientists will experience a wide variety of topics throughout the year, many of which will help explain segments of the natural world.”
“Investigate: Second Saturday Science Lab” takes place from 10 a.m. to noon the second Saturday of each month at Morrill Hall. Activities are designed for children ages 5 to 10. For upcoming topics, go to http://museum.unl.edu/investigate.
