Sophie Tatum of LaGrange, Ill., a junior at UNL, began an internship with CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” program in New York City in February. “AC 360” is a popular evening program that takes an in-depth look at world news and events.
The internship will give Tatum insight into the editorial process, strengthen research skills and offer her the opportunity to contribute to the show through participation in meetings. In production, Tatum will learn how to transcribe tape, use the various CNN databases, write for air and work with producers from story inception to finished package. She will have the opportunity to accompany producers on stories in the field.
To qualify for this internship, students must have completed their sophomore year in college and have a grade point average of 3.0 or above. They must also have excellent writing skills and a strong desire to work in a major cable/network television production environment. Internships are structured to last approximately 12 weeks.
Tatum is a junior majoring in broadcasting news, journalism and political science with minors in global security studies and economics. She has held internships at WLS Radio in Chicago and KFOR Radio in Lincoln, and has worked for the UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications media channels, 90.3 KRNU and Star City News. Additionally, she has written for UNL’s campus newspaper, the Daily Nebraskan.
Her honors include the College of Journalism and Mass Communications Honor Roll, the Neale and Olive Copple Scholarship and the Aaron Douglas Scholarship. She is a member of the college’s Student Advisory Board.
