Workshop to focus on changing job market for doctoral graduates

Nebraska Innovation Campus will host the Oct. 21 Graduate Faculty Workshop.

Registration is open through Oct. 21 for the University of Nebraska’s Graduate Faculty Workshop on Oct. 30 at Nebraska Innovation Campus. The event will bring together faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral associates from the four NU campuses to explore opportunities available to students after graduate school.

The workshop opens with a special, 10 a.m. to noon session for graduate students and postdoctoral associates. The session will help participants identify, develop and articulate the transferability of key skills throughout academic study to help them find a place in today’s job market. Students and postdoctoral associates attending the morning session can also register for the afternoon faculty workshop, which is 1 to 5 p.m. All sessions are free.

Graduate students and postdoctoral associates can click here to register. Faculty registration is available by clicking here.

More than 360 students have registered for the morning session, which will feature a talk, “Life After Grad School,” led by Paula Chambers, founder of Versatile Ph.D., a web-based career education service for doctoral students.

The afternoon portion of the workshop, “Widen Your Students’ Career Paths,” will feature keynote addresses by Chambers and Suzanne Ortega, president of the Council of Graduate Schools. Ortega previously was senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina and has served at the University of New Mexico, University of Washington and University of Missouri. Hank Bounds, NU president, also will provide remarks. Brandon Rigoni, of Gallup, will provide an industry perspective.

In addition to hearing from nationally recognized speakers, faculty will be able to discuss current career opportunities outside of the traditional path in academia, how the University of Nebraska can prepare students for nonacademic careers, and how they can help students navigate today’s job market. The workshop will end with a networking reception.
