Call for Staff Senate nominations open through Feb. 16

Nominations are now being accepted for individuals to serve on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Staff Senate. This is an exciting opportunity to step up and represent your colleagues, providing input and guidance on critical issues to university leaders.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Staff Senate is the official representative and advocacy body for all staff employees. It is tasked with providing input and guidance on relevant issues to university leaders, acting as a vital link between the staff and administration. The senate includes 57 voting members, representing specific areas of the campus community.

We strongly encourage staff from every level, job category and location across Nebraska to nominate themselves or a deserving colleague. The Staff Senate thrives on the diverse perspectives of UNL staff.

Senators represent one of eight "districts" defined by the university’s overall organization: Academic Colleges; Business and Finance; Chancellor; Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources; NU System, EVC Academic Enterprise; Research; and Student Life.

Elected senators will begin their three-year term in July 2026.

Nominations will be accepted through 5 p.m. Feb. 16. Each district's eligible members will receive a ballot to vote for their representatives in March. Staff who wish to nominate themselves are expected to work with their supervisors to seek permission to participate.

Service on the Staff Senate is recognized as a vital function for the university. Full Senate meetings are held for 90 minutes every other month and occur both in person and virtually.

Each senator also serves on a committee that meets outside the full senate meetings. Frequency of committee meetings varies and is determined by the committee. Senators should expect some additional commitment depending on senate and committee needs.

Staff participating will not be compensated monetarily. However, service on behalf of the Staff Senate is considered as being performed at the request of the chancellor, and according to Human Resources Compensable Work Time for Hourly Paid Employees Policy, it would be considered time worked.

Candidates for election to the UNL Staff Senate must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be an employee of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln who is not explicitly represented by the UNL Faculty Senate, the graduate student assembly, or the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska.
  • Be a member of the district/constituency they wish to represent at the time of the election.
  • Have an appointment of .25 FTE or greater and not have on-call or temporary status.
  • Any individual with less than .5 FTE must have written approval from their supervisor in order to be nominated.
  • Have at least six months of service to UNL at the time of nomination.
