Nebraska Extension, in partnership with Nebraska Medicine’s Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, will host free drive-thru “Brake for Breakfast” events from 7 to 9 a.m. April 24 at locations statewide.

Brake for Breakfast aims to make cancer prevention easy, accessible and engaging for all Nebraskans.

Volunteers will hand out a free breakfast to participants, along with a personalized checklist to help people understand which screenings they may need based on their age and risk factors.

“Early detection saves lives,” said Rachael Schmidt, assistant director of health promotion and screening in the Buffett Cancer Center’s Community Outreach and Engagement Office. “Brake for Breakfast brings screening awareness directly to communities in a convenient, welcoming format.”

In addition to the grab-and-go breakfast and checklist, attendees will receive:

  • Information about how to access local screening services;
  • Navigation resources for people overdue for screening;
  • A QR code to subscribe to the cancer center’s prevention and screening newsletter.

The initiative supports the Buffett Cancer Center’s mission to reduce the cancer burden, promote early detection and improve outcomes across Nebraska’s diverse communities.

“Brake for Breakfast is a simple but powerful way for Nebraskans to take a step toward better health,” said Hannah Guenther, rural health extension educator with Nebraska Extension. “By stopping in for a quick, free breakfast, participants can truly make a difference for themselves and their families. We hope people across the state take advantage of this welcoming, convenient opportunity to prioritize their well-being.”
