Farewell celebration for Chatters is Feb. 21

Lawrence Chatters will begin a new chapter at Thurgood Marshall.

University of Nebraska–Lincoln Chancellor Rodney D. Bennett is inviting the campus to attend a farewell celebration for Lawrence Chatters from 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Nebraska Union's Heritage Room.

RSVP here.

Chatters will be the inaugural senior vice president of strategic initiatives and capacity at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. In his new role, he will lead national efforts to strengthen the institutional capacity of historically Black colleges and universities through strategic initiatives, grant administration and transformative partnerships.

Chatters is currently serving as the director of community partnerships and strategic initiatives for the Office of the Chancellor, where he has been instrumental in building bridges between the university and the broader community. He led the United Way Combined Campaign in 2024, and he has spearheaded initiatives that enhance community efforts, foster institutional collaborations and expand opportunities for student success.

“Lawrence has meant a great deal to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and all those who study and work here,” Bennett said. “We will miss his leadership and his passion for UNL and its extended community. We wish him well in his new role; he has been a difference-maker for the university, Lincoln and beyond.”

Prior to his current role, Chatters made a significant impact in Husker Athletics as the executive associate athletic director for strategic initiatives. His tenure in Athletics focused on facilitating a positive culture within the department, enhancing student-athlete development programs and fostering a culture of access and belonging. He is most proud of leading the development and implementation of the Red Carpet Experience that helped thousands of Husker fans attend athletic events at no cost.

At the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Chatters will oversee a broad portfolio of strategic initiatives, grants administration, capacity building and institutional transformation projects. He will lead Project HBCU Capacity Building, a national effort to enhance enrollment growth, student retention, financial sustainability and faculty development at member institutions.
