Trailer: "The Breadwinner"

Two new films, “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” and “The Breadwinner,” open Feb. 23 at Nebraska’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Based on Peter Turner’s memoir, “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” follows the playful but passionate relationship between Turner (played by Jamie Bell) and the eccentric Academy Award-winning actress Gloria (Annette Bening) in 1978 in Liverpool. What starts as a legendary seduction grows into a deeper relationship, with Turner being the person Gloria turns to for comfort.

The couple’s passion and lust for life are tested to the limits by events beyond their control.

“Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” is rated R for language, some sexual content and brief nudity.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, “The Breadwinner” tells the story of Parvana, an 11-year-old girl growing up under Taliban rule in Afghanistan.

When her father is wrongfully arrested, Parvana disguises herself as a boy to support her family. With dauntless perseverance, Parvana draws strength from the stories of her father, and ultimately risks her life to discover if he remains alive.

“The Breadwinner” is rated PG-13 for thematic material, including some violent imagery.

Both films show at the Ross through March 1.
