First-Generation Nebraska, a campus organization that supports students who are the first in their family to attend college, is seeking faculty and staff volunteers for the 2019-2020 academic year.
The program connects first-gen students with other first-gen faculty and staff, establishing a sense of community and belonging on campus. It also provides professional development workshops for first-gen faculty and staff to help them support students’ needs.
In April, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln was named a First Forward Institution for its commitment to improving experiences and outcomes of first-generation college scholars. As part of the inaugural First Forward cohort, the university will be engaging with regional and national institutions to consult on challenges, share resources and evidence-based practices, and celebrate program successes.
First-Generation Nebraska is seeking faculty and staff interested in one or more of the following areas:
- First-gen student belonging, networking, and engagement
- Faculty development in supporting first-gen scholars (e.g., inclusive classroom pedagogies)
- Staff development in supporting first-gen scholars
- First-gen alumni and community engagement
Faculty and staff interested in volunteering can register here. For more information, contact Ashlee Young at ayoung8@unl.edu or Amy Goodburn at agoodburn1@unl.edu.
