A pandemic drama and a film celebrating its 20th anniversary open Oct. 10 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.
The Ross Fright Fest continues.
As society recedes in spring 2020, film director Paul Berger (Vincent Macaigne) returns to his childhood home in the provincial Chevreuse Valley.
Still processing the legacy of his parents and feeling out the uncertain shape of the world to come, Paul hunkers down with his documentary filmmaker girlfriend, Morgane (Nine d’Urso), his music journalist brother Etienne (Micha Lescot), and Etienne’s new girlfriend, Carole (Nora Hamzawi). Squabbling over the minutiae of health protocols and the morality of a hermetic lifestyle mediated by ubiquitous online shopping, the makeshift household finds new ways to lacerate familiar wounds. Paul also finds a surprising refuge in the compulsory quietude of pandemic life, an opportunity to reconnect with the books and art and enchanted forests of his youth. A scabrous French comedy from master filmmaker Olivier Assayas, "Suspended Time" is a sharply personal and fiercely neurotic ode to the eternal expanse of memory and the allure of life beyond our personal screens.
"Suspended Time" is not rated and shows through Oct. 16.
For Kei, Kyoko and Nozomi, their dream of playing the final high school concert together is dashed when their lead vocalist quits the band. Desperate, they recruit the very first person they see: Korean exchange student Son, played by Doona Bae ("The Host," "Broker"), whose comprehension of Japanese is limited at best. It’s a race against time as the group struggles to learn three songs in three days for the festival’s rock concert.
"Linda Linda Linda" is an effervescent, tenderhearted snapshot of youth about the unparalleled joy of jamming out with your friends. The soundtrack fuses bangers from iconic Japanese bands The Blue Hearts and Base Ball Bear with original music composed by James Iha of the Smashing Pumpkins. The beloved classic from Nobuhiro Yamashita ("Ghost Cat Anzu") is acknowledged by many as one of the greatest Japanese films of the 21st century. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the utterly charming and timeless classic returns with an all-new 4K restoration.
"Linda Linda Linda" is rated PG and shows through Oct. 16.
