Michael Taffe, professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, will discuss “Racial Inequities in National Institutes of Health Funding” in a 1:30 p.m. March 10 lecture via Zoom.
The talk is part of the Rural Drug Addiction Center Seminar Series. All events in the series are free and open to the public.
Taffe will overview a persisting disparity in NIH grant award funding that leaves proposals submitted by Black principal investigators at a substantial disadvantage. The talk will address how this has been shown to lead to a disparity in which topics of research are funding and how this may contribute to the underfunding of research on critical health questions that are of interest to non-majority populations.
Taffe earned his bachelor’s degree from the Colorado College in 1990 and a doctorate in experimental psychology at the University of California, San Diego, in 1995. His work has been focused on the potential harms and health risks that attend both acute and chronic exposure to psychoactive drugs.
