The University of Nebraska State Museum–Morrill Hall has two Virtual Sunday with a Scientist events taking place during the summer term, before in-person events return in the fall.
The Virtual Sunday with a Scientist events will take place over Zoom and will also be streamed live to the Morrill Hall Facebook Page. Register in advance to participate over Zoom using the links below, or watch on Facebook the day of the event.
The summer Virtual Sunday with a Scientist schedule is as follows:June 27, 2-2:45 p.m. — Forensic Anthropology in Action. Katie East will help participants discover what forensic anthropologists can learn from skeletons and share how her research is done. She will also lead participants through solving a mystery by thinking like a forensic anthropologist. Sign up here.
July 25, 2-2:45 p.m. — The Serengeti in a Petri Dish. Miranda Salsberry, doctoral candidate in the School of Biological Sciences, will help participants see and learn about the wild, microscopic creatures that live in lakes, rivers, and puddles. Participants will examine two different water samples to compare and contrast strategies for life in tiny organisms, including protists, rotifers, insects, crustaceans, and more. Participants will also learn about Salsberry’s research on paramecia: microscopic, single-celled critters that live in the water. Just like humans, paramecia can be affected by viruses. Salsberry will help participants learn how it happens. Sign up here.
Sunday with a Scientist is a monthly event that highlights the work of scientists, while educating children, families and the university community on a variety of topics related to science and natural history. Presenters share scientific information in a fun, informal way through demonstrations, activities or by conducting science on site.
