Three new films — ”Take Me to the River,” “The Meddler” and “Krisha” — open May 20 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Directed by Matt Sobel, “Take Me to the River” is an independent film that follows the culture clash when a gay Californian teen ventures to meet his Nebraska farm relatives. Stobel will attend the 7:30 p.m. May 20 screening of the film and participate in a question and answer session with the audience.

“Take Me to the River” will be showing through May 26.

In “The Meddler,” Marnie Minervini has relocated from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be near her daughter Lori, a successful screenwriter. But when the dozens of texts, unexpected visits and conversations dominated by unsolicited advice from Marnie force Lori to draw strict personal boundaries, Marnie finds ways to channel her eternal optimism and forceful generosity to change the lives of others — as well as her own — and find a new purpose in life.

This film is showing through June 2.

“Krisha” is showing through May 26. In the film, Krisha shows up at her sister’s Texas home on Thanksgiving morning and her close and extended family greet her with a mixture of warmth and wariness. Almost immediately, a palpable unease fills the air. As Krisha’s attempts at reconciliation become increasingly rebuffed, tension and suspicion reach their peak. Long-buried secrets and deep-seated resentments surface as everyone becomes immersed in an emotionally charged familial reckoning.
