Adam Wagler has been named interim dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications by Mark Button, executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer. The appointment is effective Dec. 24, pending approval by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

The leadership change has been prompted by the departure of Shari Veil, who has been selected to serve as provost at North Dakota State University. Details about a national search to permanently fill the position will be forthcoming.

"I am confident that Adam will provide steady, thoughtful leadership for the college, ensuring continued momentum on the college's strategic plan," Button said. "I look forward to his partnership as a member of the campus leadership as we collaboratively work with faculty, staff, students and external constituents to develop the next iteration of the university's vision and strategic priorities in the new year."

The associate dean for academic programs and associate professor of advertising and public relations, has been with the college since 2006 and he has served in a leadership capacity since 2021. Prior to UNL, he was a designer and strategist for client-side marketing teams, including Hudl in Lincoln where he created websites, mobile apps, learning modules and other interactive products.

"I am honored to step into this role and work with our talented faculty and staff on behalf of our amazing students to help the college keep moving forward as we prepare for our next dean," Wagler said. "I am excited for the important work ahead on our college strategic plan and university strategic priorities."

Wagler's professional background and research interests revolve around interactive media, emerging technology, and user experience. He has published book chapters and journal articles, including research in the Journal of Interactive Advertising, Journalism and Mass Communications Educator, the Journal Advertising Education, and Communication Research Reports.

He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in visual studies from Iowa State University and a Master of Arts in marketing, communication, and advertising from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. His doctorate in instructional technology with an emphasis on user experience in higher education is also from UNL.

During his doctoral course work he earned a certificate in mixed methods research. He is also a Big Ten Academic Alliance Leadership Fellow, an Adobe Education Leader, and an Apple Distinguished Educator.
