A UNL student will help the Chiara String Quartet close out the 2014-2015 Hixson-Lied Concert Series.
Hattie Bestul, a junior music performance major and winner of the “Play with the Chiaras” auditions, will play alongside the string quartet in a 7:30 p.m. April 10 concert in Kimball Hall. The performance will feature Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet; Mendelssohn’s Quartet No. 1, Op. 12 in E-flat Major; and Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 5.
Bestul is the first winner of the “Play with the Chiaras” auditions. The two-round contest was developed by the Chiara Quartet to offer students enrolled in the UNL chamber music class the opportunity to collaborate with the group.
The Chiara Quartet is Rebecca Fischer and Hyeyung Julie Yoon (violins), John Sirota (viola) and Gregory Beaver (cello). Chiara is in their tenth year as Hixson-Lied Artists-in-Residence in the Glenn Korff School of Music.
Tickets to the performance are available at the Lied Center for Performing Arts or at the door the night of the performance. Cost is $20 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens, and $5 for students. The performance will also be webcast at http://go.unl.edu/yny7.
Bestul is studying with Diane Barger, professor of music. As a UNL student, Bestul has performed as principal clarinet of the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band. In addition to her music degree, Bestul is minoring in business with an interest in expanding the culture of arts and music in communities.
