Information Technology Services is offering an information session on CrashPlan, a computer backup service, at 10 a.m. Feb. 12 in the Nebraska Union.
Mike Fraser, a representative of Code 42, maker of CrashPlan, will lead the session and be available to answer questions. The presentation, which is free and open to faculty, staff and students, will also be available online.
UNL offers access to CrashPlan through NSave, the university’s desktop backup service. The service recently expanded to an unlimited storage option (for up to four devices per account) through Internet 2.
“We discovered the CrashPlan software had an option of a private cloud environment that offered unlimited storage for a reasonable price,” said Linda Holsclaw, NSave service manager. “This was the perfect opportunity to give users the ability to backup all files from each of their devices and still keep the cost affordable with a software we found to be robust and user friendly.”
UNL migrated all accounts and the database to the CrashPlan data center in November. Backups are no longer stored locally on campus. All data is transmitted securely over Internet2 lines.
“Moving this storage off campus and out of state has greatly improved our ability to recover in the event of a disaster impacting the campus,” said Holsclaw.
