The old history of the American West focused on rugged frontiersmen and national expansion, but more recent historians have added new actors, in the process unsettling the earlier narratives.

One of the leaders of this new thinking, Elizabeth Jameson, will give a talk titled “The Unsettlers’ Frontier: The West Through Women’s History” at 7 p.m. April 28 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Great Plains Studies, 1155 Q St. The talk is the final lecture of the semester in the Great Plains, Great Ideas: Paul A. Olson seminar series.

Jameson’s talk will examine how adding women to the historical cast changed the story and how the perspectives of diverse women illuminate new ways to understand western history. She is the chair of American studies at the University of Calgary and the immediate past president of the Western History Association.

Jameson is the author of “All That Glitters: Class, Conflict and Community in Cripple Creek” and “The Women’s West and Writing the Range: Race, Class and Culture in the Women’s West.” She is a leader in writing about class and gender in the history of the West.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information on the lecture series, click here.
