Phi Delta Kappa celebrates 100th year

UNL’s chapter of Phi Delta Kappa International, an organization for educators, celebrated “100 Years of Connections” with a centennial event on June 12 at the Nebraska Champions Club.

The original charter for the University of Nebraska’s Phi Delta Kappa chapter was signed June 12, 1914.

The celebration included a new members initiation, dinner, keynote address, membership recognition and awards.

Bill Bushaw, chief executive officer for PDK International, delivered the keynote, discussing leadership and Nebraska’s role in helping lead the organization. Awards presented include:

  • Dr. Ron Joekel Research Award to Dawn Davis for her study, “Fidelity of Implementation, Teacher Perceptions and Child Outcomes in a Literacy Curriculum in a Head Start Program: A Mixed Methods Study.” The award recognizes research conducted by a UNL education graduate student.

  • PDK Lifetime Award to Ron Joekel for his many years of service to the organization. Joekel’s career has included teaching and administration jobs in public schools and at UNL. With PDK, Joekel has served as president of the UNL chapter, international president and international executive director.
