Sheldon paintings featured in new book, performances

Iconic paintings in the collection of the Sheldon Museum of Art, are showcased in a newly published book and live performances in the galleries.

Angels Theatre Company brings actors, playwrights, audience, and artwork together with presentations of “Reflections Series 2014” in the galleries of the exhibition “Painting from the Collection of the Sheldon Museum of Art.”

Playwrights Norm Simon, Brigid Amos, Paula Ray, Steve Enersen, Steve Gaines and Barbara Salvatore along with actors Lou and Rose Leviticus, Pippa White, Judy Hart, Diane Gonzolas, and Gabby Ayala present monologues and short plays inspired by paintings currently on view at the Sheldon.

Performances start at 6:30 p.m. on April 29, May 6 and 13 at the Sheldon, 12th and R streets on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln City Campus. Admission is free and open to all, but seating is limited to 30 people for each performance. Tickets may be reserved in advance at http://www.angelscompany.org.

The book “Painting from the Collection of the Sheldon Museum of Art” is the first publication in a quarter century on the museum’s celebrated paintings—the most distinguished and iconic part of its holdings. It showcases 125 major works in commemoration the 50th birthday of the museum’s Philip Johnson–designed building and the 125th anniversary of the Sheldon Art Association and its collaboration with the University of Nebraska.

A reception celebrating the release of the paintings catalog is 5 to 7 p.m. May 7. Authors will be present to sign books, which are available for purchase in the Sheldon’s museum store.

Admission to the museum is free.
