Calling all aspiring veterinarians. Visitors to the University of Nebraska State Museum’s November Sunday with a Scientist program for children and families will get to experience what it’s like to provide medical care to animals from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at Morrill Hall, south of 14th and Vine streets.
Veterinarians, scientists and veterinary students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences will teach visitors how to conduct a basic examination using a stethoscope to listen to the heart and lungs of a cat; compare the skeletons of a house cat and leopard to discover how the anatomy between different cats is similar; test surgical skills by playing a game; observe parasites and learn how they affect the health of animals; and learn how medicines that help people can be dangerous to pets.
Visitors are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal from home to learn how to bandage an injured paw. Other activities include face painting in celebration of the museum’s new “Feline Fine: The Art of Cats II” exhibition. Veterinary students will also be on hand to talk about veterinary school.
Sunday with a Scientist is a series of presentations that highlight the work of scientists, while educating children and families on a variety of topics related to science and natural history. Presenters share scientific information in a fun, informal way through demonstrations, activities or by conducting science on site. Sunday with a Scientist typically takes place on the third Sunday of each month. For more information on the program, including upcoming topics, go to http://www.museum.unl.edu.
