UNL expands job fair to non-profits

For years, employers in the agricultural, business and engineering and technology fields on the hunt for prospective employees have set up shop at UNL’s once-a-semester job fairs in the Nebraska Union.

Now, for the first time, UNL students will get the chance to meet with employers offering careers and internships within the non-profit sector. The Public Service and Nonprofit Career Fair will be 2 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Nebraska Union. The fair is organized by UNL Career Services.

After noticing many other career centers offering government/ public service/ non-profit fairs as a way to highlight organizations, UNL decided to follow suit, said Chris Timm, associate director of career services.

Some students know that they want to work in the non-profit sector, Timm said, but others may not have considered these organizations.

The fair will be a chance for students to meet with organizations they might not find in a broad career fair, she said.

“We hope this event provides students to engages in meaningful conversations with organizations who may offer internships and post-graduation opportunities,” Timm said.

The non-profit job fair will allow students to:

  • investigate organizations, positions and career fields they could pursue with their major and background;

  • meet representatives from organizations for whom they are interested in working;

  • increase their chances of interviewing with an employer;

  • receive sound job search advice from seasoned company recruiters; and

  • develop their network of contacts.

Local, national and international organizations will be attending the non-profit fair, including the Peace Corps, the YMCA and U.S. governmental agencies. A list of organizations who have already registered is available at: http://www.unl.edu/careers/pubservicefair
